Esta Igreja, edificada no século XIII, que embora se destaque no românico português pela excêntrica volumetria da sua fachada, cumpre ainda hoje as funções para as quais foi construída, já em tempos de paz: a liturgia. O seu projeto inicial era arrojado, mas ficou incompleto. A inscrição de 1217, descoberta num silhar [pedra] da capela-mor, evidencia o início da construção ou a conclusão de uma primeira fase de edificação, dando assim expressão à hipotética ideia de um templo com três naves abobadadas. Diante desta surge um arco triunfal apontado e encimado por óculo emoldurado.
Foi, contudo, na Época Moderna e, sobretudo, no período barroco que a espacialidade da Igreja mais modificações sofreu, sendo exemplo a capela-mor, intervencionada sob a responsabilidade dos padroeiros.
