A Igreja de Tarouquela é tudo o que resta de um mosteiro de monjas beneditinas que aqui laborou até ao século XVI. Fundado no século XII, foi na centúria seguinte, já sob a reforma beneditina, que se edificou o templo existente.
É pela influência desta ordem religiosa que o românico chega a terras de Tarouquela, uma vez que nas igrejas beneditinas são frequentes temáticas escultóricas como animais antitéticos, dois homens com uma só cabeça, serpentes e sereias, entre outras.
